Kenya Power has restored electricity distribution after a disruption that affected several parts of the country on Friday morning.

The near-countrywide blackout hit several regions from 9am to 12pm on Friday, September 6, except North Rift and Western Kenya.

In which areas has KPLC restored power supply?

KPLC apologised to customers for the inconveniences caused by the outage, which occurred in under one week after a similar disruption on Friday, August 30.

"We have successfully restored power supply to parts of North Rift, Western, Central Rift, Nairobi and Mt.Kenya.
"We would like to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage and seek their patience as we work towards restoration of normal service in the remaining areas," said KPLC.

The areas include major towns such as Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Naivasha, Thika, Eldoret, Kericho, Kakamega, Siaya, Busia, Vihiga, Kisumu, Bungoma and Webuye.

KPLC said it will provide additional updates on the progress of the restoration exercise in subsequent alerts.

Is there a backup plan for KPLC?

KPLC has been experiencing frequent power outages and supply failures.

The company, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, unveiled a backup National Control Centre in March 2024 to minimise these outages.

KPLC Managing Director Joseph Siror revealed that the facility was set up in the Coast region at a cost of KSh 50 million.

The utility company said the backup centre will safeguard the security of the electricity supply, providing an alternative despatch point in case of failure of the main control centre.

KPLC added that the backup facility gets electricity supply from various power generation sources and dispatches it to various consumers across the country based on cost and demand.
