Kenyan drivers have started working in Germany days after President William Ruto inked a labour agreement with the European country.

The German Federal Office showed four Kenyan drivers (two male and two female) being received by Claus Rune Madsen, Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of Transport, and the Kenyan ambassador to Germany Stella Mokaya.

The quadruple will be working at Aktiv Bus Flensburg.

How many Kenyan bus drivers will be hired in Germany?

The Standard reported that 3,000 Kenyan bus drivers will get jobs in Germany.

Kenya's ambassador to Germany, Stella Mokaya, said this comes after fruitful bilateral negotiations that she led alongside Rose Wanja, the regional representative of Skillution Germany.

“Germany was the first country to recognise Kenya's independence in 1963 thereby laying a firm foundation for a partnership that has brought stronger bilateral partnership a good example of international cooperation," Mokaya explained.

Aktiv Bus Flensburg's managing director revealed that the European country faces a shortage of 400,000 workers annually.

Germany clarifies William Ruto's jobs claim

President William Ruto stated during an interview with DW that a deal signed between Kenya and Germany would create 250,000 job opportunities for Kenyans.

However, Germany’s Interior Ministry refuted the claim, stating that no agreement had been made to provide 250,000 jobs for Kenyans.

The ministry emphasised that the agreement did not include specific numbers or quotas for workers.

What did Sweden offer immigrants?

In other news, Sweden announced plans to offer migrants up to $34,000 (KSh 4.4 million) to voluntarily return to their home countries starting in 2026.

The new policy was expected to appeal to long-term unemployed migrants or those reliant on government welfare.

Migration Minister Johan Forssell announced the policy shift, stating it marks a "paradigm shift" in Sweden's migration approach.
