Nairobi - Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) hosted a stakeholder engagement forum at KAWI complex in South C Nairobi on September 16.

The forum was held to actively engage key partners in exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) as a solution to bridge the energy financing gap and strengthen Kenya's transmission infrastructure.

KETRACO clarified that the plan to develop a 625-kilometer high-voltage power transmission line in Kenya remains in the approval stage, with no formal agreements yet signed between KETRACO and any other company.

"The projects are currently undergoing thorough risk assessments and legal reviews, with no contracts signed yet. KETRACO remains committed to full transparency and adherence to all regulatory processes," KETRACO said on X.

This comes after weeks of reports that KETRACO had already signed a deal with the Adani Energy Solutions Limited.

Who is interested in KETRACO deal?

KETRACO managing director John Mativo stated that the project is currently under evaluation through Privately Initiated Proposals (PIPs) from two key entities.

Mativo disclosed that Africa50 sent a proposal in 2018 and Adani Energy Solutions Limited in 2023.

Notably, Africa50 proposed constructing a 237-kilometer section of the line, while Adani Energy Solutions offered to build a 388-kilometer line.

"KETRACO is in the stages of negotiating Public-Private Partnership (PPP) proposals with Adani Energy Solutions and Africa50 for the construction of critical high-voltage Transmission Lines," KETRACO further disclosed.

Why KETRACO is looking for PPPs?

The company is looking for private investors to bridge the financing gap and modernise Kenya's transmission lines to support the growing power demands.

"To bridge the financing gap in power transmission, KETRACO is exploring partnerships with private companies like Adani Energy Solutions & Africa50. These Public-Private Partnerships will enable the timely development of new transmission lines, boosting system stability etc.," KETRACO explained to the stakeholders at KAWI Complex.
