Kiambu - A woman is recovering in hospital after her lover allegedly poured hot water on her face following a disagreement over their relationship.

Nelly Wanjiru, 29, has been hospitalised for two weeks after sustaining severe burns in the brutal attack that has left her emotionally and physically scarred.

The tragic incident occurred on the night of Thursday, August 29, when Nelly’s partner, Simon Mwangi Maina, turned on her during what seemed like an ordinary evening.

Nelly recounted that she was warming his food when he excused himself to drink hot water.

Moments later, he confronted her with the kettle in hand and splashed the boiling water on her.

In the chaos that followed, Nelly managed to get her child and nanny out of the house while Simon, seemingly emotionless, continued advancing towards her.

Her neighbours eventually intervened and rushed her to the hospital, while Mwangi fled the scene.

Nelly, who suffered 25% burns, reported the attack to Kiambu Police Station under OB number 03/29/08/2024.

Why did Simon attack Nelly?

The young couple had previously enjoyed better days, as photos of their happier moments indicate.

Nelly, who has a background in finance, had even helped Mwangi start his business.

However, tensions arose when she declined to move in with him, explaining that she was not ready and wanted to focus on her career.

"He wanted us to move in together, but I felt I wasn't ready, and he wasn’t ready either. I helped him with transportation; I made sure he moved with dignity so he wouldn’t feel like I was kicking him out or anything. I told him we are still going to date, but for now, I need to focus on growing my career while he focuses on growing his finances and business," she said.

Mwangi is yet to be found since the incident with Nelly encouraging herself that her pain should never be felt by another woman.

"Every time I felt pain, I would tell God, "Let this pain I am feeling be the price to have this man arrested so that he doesn’t hurt another woman." On a day like today, I feel that God has really helped me. I feel like I’m back to more or less who I was before," Nelly added.

Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei dies after being burned

In another tragic incident, Kenyans were recently sent into mourning after a Ugandan athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, passed on after succumbing to burn injuries.

The athlete was reportedly set on fire by her boyfriend while at her home in Trans Nzoia county.

Cheptegei, who recently competed in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, suffered severe burns over 80% of her body.

The attack was allegedly carried out by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, during a heated argument.
