People with disabilities in the country are pressing for a special meeting with President William Ruto to discuss their life challenges and concerns about national issues.

Why do people with disability want to meet Ruto?

While speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the group, through its chairman, Hafid Maalim, called on Ruto to consider their request seriously.

Hafid said they want discussions focused on discrimination in the distribution of employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

The group argues that the government has not upheld the constitutional mandate requiring that people with disabilities hold at least 5% of elective and appointive public positions.

"For the longest time, people with disabilities have faced discrimination both in the public and private sector, leaving us at the Mercy of well-wishers. That's why we have so many cases of begging everywhere," the chairman said

They further urged the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare to implement the 5% principle at all government levels so people with disabilities can access essential job opportunities.

They argued their attempts to raise concerns through mainstream and social media channels have been unsuccessful.

"Now we decide to address our issues directly to you so that maybe you can pay attention."

The People with Disability group is now advocating for employment, healthcare, and education systems that support people with disabilities and specialised insurance solutions.

The group's chairman had privately appealed to the president and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, warning that their ongoing differences could result in some promises to the electorate being abandoned.

People with disability ask Ruto to listen to Kenyans

Earlier, people with disabilities urged Ruto to listen to the concerns of Kenyans and aviation industry stakeholders who have warned against handing over Jomo Kenyatta International Airport management to Adani Airport Holdings.

Speaking on Friday, September 13, the People with Disability group joined the Senate in urging the president to abandon the takeover plans to protect Kenya's global reputation.

Led by chairman Hafid, the group told TUKO.co.ke that Ruto could use Kenya’s bilateral relations with the global business community to secure a reliable and reputable firm to upgrade the airport.
