Eldoret is the newest city in Kenya and among the fastest-growing urban centres in the country.

According to the 2019 census report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the city is the fifth most populated urban area, with a population of over 475,000.

The name Eldoret originated from the Maasai word 'eldore', meaning a stony river, in reference to the Sosiani River, which runs through the town and is a tributary of the Kipkaren River.

Eldoret is referred to as the city of champions, hosting world-class athletes who have invested in the Uasin Gishu county capital.

Besides athletes, businessmen and politicians own multi-million properties and businesses.

Who are the wealthiest people from Eldoret?

1. William Ruto's businesses and properties

President William Ruto is among the wealthiest people from Eldoret, having served as Member of Parliament (MP), minister and deputy president in a political career spanning over three decades.

Like most Kenyans, Ruto has often described himself as a self-made man who endured a difficult childhood.

Away from his busy political life, Ruto still runs his chicken business at his home in Sugoi.

He previously disclosed that he sells 150,000 eggs daily, earning him at least KSh 1.5 million.

Ruto's home at his Koilel Farm is currently under construction, showcasing an impressive palatial mansion.

2. Jackson Kibor's family, their properties

According to Daily Nation, the late Uasin Gishu farmer Jackson Kibor left behind an estate estimated at KSh 16 billion.

The Eldoret businessman's widow and over 25 children have been fighting to control the estate, which includes thousands of acres of land.

Kibor, who rose from a driver to a renowned tycoon, had an agribusiness empire that included farms in Kabenes, Moiben, Kipkabus and Kitale.

He also owned a luxurious mansion and numerous off-road vehicles, including a Landcruiser pickup, which helped him navigate unpaved roads.

3. Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich's (Buzeki) businesses

Forbes listed Buzeki among Kenya's little-known millionaires running multi-billion companies behind the scenes.

The middle-aged politician describes himself as a self-made individual who rose from a milk hawker in the coastal city of Mombasa to a billionaire.

Buzeki has interests in Buzeki Enterprises, Bunoil Limited, Koima Motors Limited, Transtruckers Logistics Group Limited, Buzeki Insurance Limited and Buzeki Fleet System Management Limited.

4. Joshua Chepkwony's businesses

Joshua Kipchumba Chepkwony (CK Joshua) is the founder and chairman of Kass Media Group, which operates Kass FM radio and Kass TV.

The billionaire also manages Jamii Telecommunications, which offers Faiba services, and Jamii Millings, a company in the cereals milling sector.

The tycoon behind the fibre optic network started business early by buying goats and chicken in the village and reselling them for a profit.

Chepkwony is the chairman of Sergoit Holdings Limited, where he is the majority shareholder.

Business Daily noted that the firm was behind the construction of the KSh 40 billion Sergoit Golf and Wildlife resort on the outskirts of Eldoret.

5. David Lang'at's wealth

David Langat is the chairman and founder of DL Group of Companies, established in the 1980s.

The group's earliest business ventures involved exporting and importing commodities such as electronics and furniture. It has since diversified into various sectors, such as agriculture, real estate, and manufacturing.

Langat rose to fame in 2017 when he, in partnership with the Guangdong New South Group, initiated the KSh 200 billion AEZ Pearl River Industrial Park in Uasin Gishu county.

When was Eldoret conferred city status?

On Thursday, August 15, Eldoret was elevated to city status following a successful application process and approval by the Senate.

President William Ruto signed the charter and affixed the government seal, officially designating Eldoret as a city.

Residents of Eldoret could not hide their joy after the head of state conferred the municipality to the country's fifth city.
