Njeri Maina has opened up about one of the most challenging decisions she faced this year—sending her 12-year-old daughter to boarding school.

Describing the experience as "the hardest thing" she’s ever done, she recounted the emotional toil it took on her at first.

In a Facebook post, she recalled the rollercoaster that followed her daughter's departure.

Njeri disclosed that she struggled to deal with the loneliness of returning to an empty house.

"I used to cry every time I thought about her," Njeri admitted. "I kept questioning myself—was it the best decision? Will she think I don't want her? Is she okay?"

These constant doubts and worries weighed heavily on her, resulting in moments of heightened stress and even outbursts.

A friend later explained that she was experiencing separation anxiety, a condition common among parents who send their kids away for the first time.

Njeri’s daughter, who was in Grade 7, had previously attended St Augustine, a school in Mombasa that also offered boarding.

Despite her daughter’s initial interest in boarding, Njeri decided against it at the time, reasoning that their home was just ten minutes away.

In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, she disclosed that a change in her work schedule prompted her decision.

The new roster required her to alternate between day and night shifts, which left her grappling with the idea of leaving her daughter home alone at night.

As a single mother, this concern eventually pushed her to seek out a boarding school farther away from Mombasa.

The transition was initially difficult, with Njeri admitting to counting down the days until her daughter returned home.

However, the eventual homecoming brought immense joy and relief as she noticed significant changes in her daughter.

"My daughter loves the school," Njeri said proudly. "It has really boosted her confidence."

She chimed in on the discussion about parents sending young kids to boarding, adding that everyone has their own reasons for it.

Njeri says that for her, it was for safety reasons and the peace of knowing the girl was okay, even when she was working at night.

Before taking your child to boarding school, do a deep research about the school," she advised.

Although it was a tough decision, Njeri reaffirmed her belief that boarding school has been the right choice after all.
