An online hailing cab driver has apologised to Kenyans, who had seemingly abandoned them and started going for matatus, after they revised their rates.
On Monday, July 15, digital taxi drivers downed their tools over what they termed as overexploitation by ride-hailing apps.
The drivers took to the streets of Nairobi, complaining about low ride charges, high commission charged by the companies and lack of pick-up and drop-off points in the CBD.

A lady cab driver who had parked in areas such as Kilimani and Kileleshwa complained of not getting requests from clients for four hours.
"Our customers, we are sorry. We were not serious when we said you go with matatus. We will even provide you with discounts; as Maggie wa Uber I have apologised on behalf of other drivers. Please don't take matatus anymore," said Maggie in a video shared on Facebook by Prime Time News Global.
Philip Njaramba:
"Hii ni yako, kazi lazima tuheshimiwe.let the market dynamics shape the industry,no more subsides in the name of discounts.wacha app zilipishe full amount ndio those who can afford cabs wabaki."
Josiah Kiangoi:
"Underline the tunegotiate! It's must be a win-win value for money. We say No to punitive rates!"
Regina Justins
"Mimi kwanza I took it seriously ππππ π siku hizi ata sichelewi club ,,kabla matatu ziishe nakimbia stage πππjuu usiku ndo mnaeza kuwa ata worse,,,,,,yaani Niki imagine nitapanda Uber na the only money I have alafu mtu anikidnappπ π ."
Baba LuiznaNester Mwega:
"πππ I remember having an argument online with a driver. Eti we have to acknowledge that mafuta imepanda kosokoso and that we are not supporting them to negotiate aga, they get a raw deal in that partnership. Nikamuuliza sisi kama customer tunaingilia wapi hiyo biashara? That we should know that they will not be accepting the money shown on the app but will be adding 1.5%. Nikamuuliza kama akinibeba nifike halafu nimwambie uchumi ni mbaya nimepunguza 1.5% from the stated amount kama atakubali."
Dennis Muliro Simiyu:
"Jokes msifanye na pesa yetu. You don't know the hardship we go through to get this money. Using Uber doesn't mean we don't have other options. I remember a driver trying to lecture me on how the price was low! My friend, no one forced you to join Uber, and neither are we the people responsible for setting prices."
Benna Maina:
"Hakuna bana, kaende sana Maggie lazma kieleweke...cab irudishe heshima yake."
Dorcas Kayden:
"Kuleni Kiburi yenu...Sato I request four cabs mukakataa kunibeba KSh 1510 nikapewa discount ya KSh 1350."
In another story, Joseph Gikunju, a climate change specialist, disclosed he started part-time taxi driving in 2020 as a hobby.
After four years of experience as a driver and rider, he opened a YouTube channel to advise users on how the apps work.
Gikunju explained some taxi apps have higher rates during rush hours while others maintain their normal rates.
