Nairobi - A suspected thief believed to be part of a gang vandalising sewer covers in the CBD has been arrested.

The man, identified as Boaz, was caught in the act of stealing iron sheets early Monday morning, September 16, around 1am, on Haile Selassie Road.

Boaz admitted to regularly stealing iron sheets and selling them to a scrap metal dealer due to the challenging economic conditions.

"I am a thief. I usually steal iron sheets from Greenpark and take them to Kim at Land Mawe," Boaz stated.

When asked about the sale, Boaz revealed that this was his first time dealing directly with the dealer.

"I had never sold to him before. Today, I went to him because I was hungry. He asked me to bring the sheets," he explained.

How Nairobi county officials reacted to Boaz's actions

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Rodriques Mulindi, a county official who was part of the team that apprehended Boaz, condemned the thefts.

"A few individuals cannot be allowed to disrupt life for Nairobi residents. We've seen streetlights vandalised, sewer lids stolen, and constant replacements needed. It's disheartening that licensed scrap metal dealers accept such items knowing they are public property," Mulindi stated.

He urged the government to take stronger action against the rogue dealers who tarnish the reputation of legitimate scrap dealers.
