Sammy Onyango, a mechanical engineer from Kenya, has claimed that he was deported from the UK after he came up with a brilliant military invention, but it was allegedly stolen from him.

Where did the Desert Storm war happen?

The mechanical engineer also studied materials engineering during his post-graduate studies.

"In the process, I think I have done one of the most complex things that affected the aviation industry in a major way. I don't know if you have heard about the Desert Storm when Iraq attacked Kuwait?" posed Onyango.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Operation Desert Storm began 31 years ago — on January 16, 1991 — five months after Iraqi forces invaded and annexed Kuwait.

That operation to oust the Iraqis is also known as the Gulf War; it came about after former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein refused to withdraw his forces from Kuwait.

"During the war, there was a problem with the British Tornado jets carrying missiles for bombing. The missiles were guided by laser beams whose accuracy is maintained when they are very cool, and this is given by very cold liquid oxygen. They used to carry oxygen in a cylinder, and when it ran out, you couldn't launch the missile and had to go back for it," explained Onyango to TUKO Talks.

With this procedure, the mission became cumbersome and expensive. Then someone at Doughty Weapons Systems of England thought of the Onboard Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS), but then everything burns in oxygen, and that was problematic because, in aviation, you don't want anything related to fire.

Since a problem had reared its head, there was a need for a solution, and the authorities went scrambling for a solution.

"Doughty and USA's NASA approached the university where I was, and the project landed on me. The material that I came up with for making the pump, which generates pure oxygen onboard both commercial and military aircraft, is one of a kind. I came up with it in 1991," he said.

Onyango shared that given his brilliant invention, he was asked to remain in the UK, but when he refused, he was deported to Kenya.
