Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Wilson Sossion has alleged widespread corruption within the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Why Wilson Sossion accused TSC of corruption

Sossion alleged a lack of transparency in TSC's hiring process, claiming that new teaching positions are filled without public advertisements.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, he suggested that these appointments are influenced by corruption, with applicants colluding with government officials to secure jobs.

"The situation at TSC is a situation where angels would weep because of the magnitude of corruption. This may necessitate sending the commissioners and the CEO home. For you to be employed as a P1 teacher you must pay KSh 350,000 and some of these employment letters are sold through government officers. To be employed as a graduate is KSh 500,000 and to be promoted is KSh 150,000," he claimed.

According to him, TSC is not independent and is committing crimes against the citizens of Kenya.

In light of these allegations, Sossion has called for an audit of the TSC. He urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and the auditor general to conduct a thorough investigation.

Areas within TSC Wilson Sossion wants audited

Sossion recommended that the probe focus on three key areas: financial system and transactions, including third-party remittances; teacher employment and promotions over the past five years; and any unconstitutional policies within the TSC.

"I'm willing to be a witness in all these forensic processes as an insider who has worked in this space. I am ready to defend it in a court of law or anywhere because this is a very serious matter. We are talking about the destruction of the lives of the children of this country," he added.

He urged them to reconsider the strike, stating that the government had provided the necessary resources.
