As many as 281 members of the security forces in Afghanistan have been dismissed after they failed to grow a beard.

The soldiers were sacked by the Taliban's Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Propagation of Virtue.

Why did Taliban detain 13,000 people?

A statement by Mohibullah Mokhlis, the Director of Planning and Legislation at the ministry, confirmed the information.

CNBC reports that the ministry had also detained more than 13,000 people for "immoral acts" in the past year.

However, details of the alleged offences or the gender of the detainees were not revealed.

Furthermore, 21,328 musical instruments were destroyed, and thousands of computer operators were prohibited from selling "immoral and unethical" films in markets.

Limitations against women by Taliban

The morality ministry took over the disbanded women's ministry premises in Kabul after the Taliban ascended to power in 2021.

They have, however, received harsh criticism for restrictions against women and inhibiting freedom of expression.

Since the Taliban reign started, women were barred from travelling long distances without a male guardian.

The other rule is that women should cover their faces or wear an all-enveloping burqa.

Complaints against Taliban over women's mistreatment

It will be noted that most Afghan women covered their hair in public even before the Taliban takeover.

However, some did not cover their faces or wear a burqa before the new regime.

Since then, there have been cases of morality officials stopping and detaining women for allegedly failing to meet their interpretation of Islamic dress.

Effects of Taliban takeover in Afghanistan

Despite three years of improved security following the end of the Taliban's insurgency, Afghanistan's economy remains stagnant.

United Nations reports that the country's population is in the grips of a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The report adds that a third of Afghanistan's roughly 40 million people live on bread and tea.

On the positive side, the currency has been resilient, corruption is no longer ubiquitous, and tax collection has improved.
