In the heart of Mombasa, the Sahajanand Centre stands as a testament to the power of philanthropy and community spirit.

Established in 2008 by the late Hasmukh “Hasuu” Patel, the centre has become a lifeline for thousands of underprivileged individuals in the coastal city.

Hasuu's vision of compassion

Hasmukh "Hasuu" Patel, a prominent industrialist, founded the Centre with a mission to alleviate hunger and provide education to the needy.

The centre’s flagship initiative, the Sahajanad Feeding Centre, serves daily meals to over 40,000 people.

"His idea was to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry, yet he was blessed abundantly," a Mombasa resident told TUKO.co.ke.

The Sahajanand Special School, also part of the centre, offers education and basic needs to over 5,000 pupils.

This initiative has opened doors for many children who would otherwise have limited access to quality education.

The Mombasa Cement CEO’s philanthropic efforts were not limited to food and education.

He was known for supporting persons with disabilities and paying house rent for jobless individuals facing eviction.

In addition to addressing food insecurity, Hasuu’s vision extended to education.

Hasuu transformed Kibarani dumpsite

The billionaire industrialist is also credited with funding scholarships for over 10,000 learners.

He also transformed the Kibarani dumpsite into a KSh 700 million tourist attraction, significantly improving the once filthy environment.

Hasuu's recent death has left a significant void in the community that will be difficult to fill.

News of his demise brought tears and deep sorrow for many who benefited from his generosity.

What killed Hasuu?

Hasuu passed away on August 29, 2024, at the age of 58, leaving many in pain and grief.

He reportedly started complaining of stomach pains and was rushed to Premier Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

With Hasuu’s widow and three children left to carry on his legacy, the community is optimistic that the centre will continue to thrive.

Many hope that his predecessors will ensure his vision of a compassionate and supportive community lives on.
