Isaac Ddamulira, Ssemwogerere’s brother, recounted the tragic details of the accident that claimed the lives of the entire family.
The fatal crash occurred on the night of September 1, as Ssemwogerere was driving his family to Tsomo, where his wife worked as a teacher.
“When they reached Buttaworth in Eastern Cape province, another car, driven by someone reportedly intoxicated, veered into their lane and collided with them,” Ddamulira explained.
Following the crash, the family’s vehicle was thrown off the road and plunged into a valley, where police later retrieved the bodies.
Ssemwogerere and Arinaitwe were respected teachers who lived and worked in South Africa for 17 years.
Ddamulira described the couple as devout Christians who had attended church just hours before the accident.
"This couple we are sending off today has always been God-fearing. They would always turn to prayer to help them through any challenges," he shared.
During the service, it was revealed that the family had been planning to return to Uganda in December for the first time since leaving for South Africa in 2007.
Ssemwogerere's mother, Alice Nalubega, tearfully expressed that the tragic accident had robbed her of that long-awaited reunion.
"I was expecting my son, his wife, and my grandchildren to come home this December, but it was God's plan for this not to happen," Nalubega said.
