Arusha, Tanzania – In a heartbreaking incident, an eight-year-old student of Burka Primary School died after being struck by a speeding vehicle.

The tragedy occurred around midday on August 30 when Maurine James Kalelembu was crossing the road on her way home from school.

How did Maurine James Kalelembu die?

Kusaga TV reports that Maurine, born in 2016, was a bright and beloved student in class two.

Her sudden yet preventable loss left her family, school, and the wider community in deep mourning.

The incident sparked an outcry among the mourners, who urged the government to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.

"We request that the government construct a footpath for pedestrians because we currently share the road with motorists," one mourner expressed.

Calls for road safety lessons in schools

In addition to infrastructure improvements, there were calls for schools to introduce road safety lessons as part of the curriculum.

The mourners emphasized the importance of educating children on road safety to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.

Maurine's teacher recalled the dark afternoon he received news about his student's demise.

"Two pupils came to me at around lunch time and informed me that a car had killed her," he said, overcome with grief.

He requested the police service to visit his school to sensitize the students on road safety.

Kenyans mourn Nithi Bridge accident victims

Meanwhile, Kenyans are still struggling to come to terms with a recent accident which claimed the lives of 12 people.

The grisly crash occurred at the infamous Nithi Bridge in Meru when a 14-seater van rammed into a pick-up.

Details indicate that the deceased were nine women and two children from a merry-go-round group called Rongai Women.
