President William Ruto's economic adviser, David Ndii, has criticised Kenyan graduates for allegedly lacking the writing skills needed in the job market.

Ndii insinuated that most government agencies struggle during the recruitment process to get appropriate candidates.

In a tweet shared on his Twitter timeline on Thursday, July 27, the economist suggested Kenyan graduates fail to secure jobs because their curricula vitae (CVs) were poorly written.

"We hire graduates. The most frequent complaint of potential employers is poor writing skills. Even well-written CVs are rare. 2 out of 3 have typos. I'm surprised there are so many graduates who can write PhD chapters because they can't get jobs," he tweeted.

BrighterMonday CEO says graduates lack soft skills

BrighterMonday chief executive officer (CEO) Chris Otundo noted that most job seekers remained unemployed due to a lack of interview skills.

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Otundo reiterated that most university and college graduates failed in job interviews because they had inadequate soft skills.

“Today, most of our college and university graduates fail to secure jobs because they are not equipped with job interview skills like a presentable resume, interview techniques and soft presentation skills," he said.
As a company, we have a plan of training and equipping youth with the right soft skills they can combine with their hard skills to acquire jobs or even pitch for business funding for those interested in self-employment," he added.

David Ndii's tweet sparks debate

Ndii's tweet sparked debate online with some Kenyans agreeing with him, while others dismissed him.

Kenya's unemployment crisis

In April, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released a report showing that the number of unemployed Kenyans grew to 2.97 million.

About half or 1.33 million of jobless Kenyans did not show interest in searching for jobs or starting a business.

Data from the KNBS showed a 2.94% increase from 2.89 million reported in quarter three of 2022.

KNBS figures showed that 80,000 jobs were lost in the fourth quarter of 2022, three months after the August elections.
