A group of sanitation workers in the southern Indian state of Kerala is a happy lot after winning a KSh 171 million jackpot.

They bought a lottery ticket at KSh 430

The determined women are part of a group tasked with collecting biodegradable waste from the Malappuram district, a job that pays them very little. They pooled money to buy a lottery ticket.

BBC reports that since the money was insufficient to meet their needs, most of them borrow money to afford various expenses for their children.

On June 30, the group bought a KSh 430 ticket for a monsoon bumper prize lottery (bumper prize lotteries are issued for special occasions such as festivals).

Kuttimalu, 72, says she was initially sad when Radha collected funds because she didn't have enough money.

"Then Cherumannil Baby (another member of the group) told me she was willing to lend me half for the ticket," she said on August 1.

"This is the fourth time we bought a ticket for the bumper prize, we are fourth time lucky!" Radha said.
"Luck was never on my side," she said.

"He used to buy lottery tickets with the money we kept for dialysis. He left us without finishing the construction of our house. I have to complete it now," she said.
