Nairobi - A heartbroken young lady has opened up about her sour relationship with her ex-husband.

Meeting mother-in-law for first time

Lydia Wanjiku Nyakola got married to escape the mistreatment of her mother, which she had experienced since she was young.

The ex-husband treated her well in their first days, but after a while, he changed, especially when Wanjiku met her mother-in-law.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Wanjiku's mother-in-law, wanted her son to marry a woman from their tribe, which made Wanjiku's ex-husband change.

Sleeping outside, refusing to buy food

"He started sleeping out and refusing to buy food. I told my husband I was okay with him marrying a second wife from his tribe if that would appease his mother. I knew I had nowhere else to go, and going back home with two children was not an option considering what I had gone through there. So I told him he could marry another wife and build another house because he had money," she said.

It became the beginning of her ex-husband showing his true colours. Wanjiku said he would disappear for days.

When he returned, he had another woman in his arms, someone from the tribe his mother would prefer.

Kisii lady despises potential co-wife

"He came with the woman and put her in the house without even talking to me, so I told him he should tell me who she was so I could make her something to eat. He asked me why I was asking a stupid question, so I remained silent.
Then he asked for tea, and I asked him how could I have tea when he was out for three days without caring what we were eating. He just looked at me and then took the woman, and they went to see his mother. She was glad when she heard the lady was a Kisii, and they started laughing," she said.

A hurt Wanjiku had to persevere through the pain as she had nowhere else to seek shelter and comfort.

Despite the increasing mistreatment, she could not raise her voice as she had no bargaining power in the relationship.

Working menial jobs to feed children

She was even banned from going to work or seeking menial jobs as she was to be a quiet housewife and good mum to their kids.

"One day, he went for a whole week, and I couldn’t care what mother-in-law said anymore, so I went out looking for menial jobs because I couldn’t stay in the house with hungry children. Then he came back with another woman one day, and now we were three. He was so drunk.
When he came home with the two women, I asked him why he did that to me and told him to marry instead of acting like a boy coming home drunk with women. Those women beat me up. He was seated there and said nothing," Wanjiku painfully recalled.

Tony Onyango's widow speaks on toxic marriage

Like Wanjiku, wife of Tony Onyango, the late rugby star narrated being fought by in-laws and being in a toxic marriage.

Maria Muinde and Onyango were not having such an easy time in their marriage a few months before his death.

"There's nothing as horrible as a spouse on self-destruct mode. I was with Baba Shane for 10 years. Four years in marriage, I was almost taking my life. There's nothing as excruciating as coming to terms with your child's special needs diagnosis and being in a fought marriage," said Muinde.

She said she was cautioned against talking in the house or giving suggestions but to be silent and a yes woman.

Nigerian marriage lasts two days

Separately, a man divorced his wife two days after she fought with his mother over food.

Two days after tying the knot, the Nigerian man filed for divorce over his wife's rude behaviour towards his mother.

His wife and mother had a physical exchange at their wedding reception that saw both parties slap each other.

The man was hellbent on ending things with his estranged wife without heeding his mother's appeals to forgive her.
