Nairobi - Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei has criticised the United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) for claiming 23 Kenyans had been killed during the anti-government protests.

During an interview on Tuesday, July 26, on NTV, the PS dismissed the situation in Kenya as a manufactured crisis.

Sing’oei said the UN and other international bodies had jumped the gun by accusing the police of brutality and quoting a huge number of fatalities during the protests called by Azimio.

He said that he only knows the figure of protesters killed during the demonstrations stands at seven casualties.

"This is nothing but a manufactured crisis, and for the international community, particularly the UN, to speak and present a number such as 23 people have been killed is really to act out of time. To the best of my knowledge, the CS for Interior has given the number of seven having been killed," he said.

Sing’oei questions whose to blame for deaths

The PS further wondered who would be held responsible if the government accepted the figure of deaths to be 2.

"So we would just accept as government the view that has been bandied around that 23 people have been killed because of a protest. How would we even know who is culpable for those killings suppose we were to assume and accept that 23 people were killed? Who perpetuated those killings? Is it government culpable for those killings at all," he added.

Kithure Kindiki's on maandamano deaths

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki had earlier said the claims that police brutalised demonstrators were malicious, false and intended to paint the officers in lousy light.

According to the CS, those accusing the police could be the ones masterminding the violent acts veiled as peaceful protests.

"The architects of this false and distorted narrative bear the greatest responsibility for planning, financing and executing heinous crimes resulting in death and injury of civilians and law enforcement officers and massive destruction of private and public property during the past few weeks," he said.
