Nairobi - Kenyans have been critical of services offered by the immigration department amid claims of runaway corruption in the state department.

On Tuesday, April 23, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki revealed that his Ministry had addressed issues that had caused delays in the processing of the passport.

"The historical backlog in the processing of the Kenyan passport has been conclusively resolved, and the bottlenecks that had resulted in the frustration of many applicants have been addressed," the CS said.

The CS added that passport applications from September 1st will take three days to be processed.

Kindiki added that the government had acquired adequate passport printing equipment to address the passport crisis.

"The government has facilitated the acquisition of adequate passport printing equipment, paid all the pending supplier bills, and addressed the supply chain constraints," he stated.

Kenyans commend gov't

Following CS Kindiki's announcement that he has tasked the Directorate of Immigration with developing a passport production and collection sustainability plan, some Kenyans have confirmed that they have received notifications to collect the document.

Several applicants on social media platforms confirmed that they were able to secure their passports just days and weeks after applying.

A Facebook user known as Mary Waceke posted on the Facebook travel page known as Wanderlust that she got her passport in a record two days.

"I took my biometrics on 8th Feb and got mine on 10th February, two dates apart. I didn't know anyone and didn't bribe, what a blessing", she posted.

Winnie S Mwolobi confirmed that hers was ready for collection, but she had challenges getting an appointment date.

"Mine is ready for collection but am not able to book for an appointment to collect. Anyone else experiencing this challenge?” her post read.

Diana Muloki, who has a dyslexic child who needs to travel to get specialised treatment in Germany, was also pleasantly surprised after getting an SMS notification asking her to book an appointment to collect the document.

"My 15 year _old daughter has dyslexia and was set to travel so that she can get treatment,we applied for the document in January this year , so on Friday I was pleasantly surprised after getting the notification to go and collect it.My daughter was very excited", she stated.

Gov't receives new passport booklets

Earlier, the government announced the acquisition of more passport printing materials to fast-track the processing of the documents.

The Directorate of Immigration Services confirmed the receipt of 112,700 passport booklets, comprising 92,400,50 pages (B-series) and 20,300,66 pages (C-series).

With the booklets, the government said the issuance of passports would now be prioritised on a first-in-first-out basis.
