Kisumu Landlord Reduces Rent For Tenants On Strong Shilling: "Effective Immediately"

A notice signed by a Kisumu landlord announcing rent reduction has gone viral on social media.

In the notice, the landlord cited a strong shilling and reduction in fuel prices as the main reasons for slashing the rent for his tenants.

Besides reducing rent, Amos Anyanga, who owns Anyanga Apartments, noted he would provide water and garbage services for free until further notice.

He also reduced electricity and internet charges by half. It was the second time the landlord reduced rent, having done so again in 2022.

"Due to the strengthening of the shilling and drop in the cost of fuel, your monthly rent is hereby reduced," Anyanga stated in a notice, while indicating new rental charges.

On Wednesday, April 17, the Central Bank of Kenya quoted the shilling 131.01 against the US dollar, having appreciated by over 19% since February.

New rent charges at Anyanga's Apartments

Those residing in a single room will now pay KSh 2,000 from KSh 3,000, while those living in one-bedroom houses would pay KSh 6,500 instead of KSh 8,000.

The rent for a two-bedroom house, which was KSh 13,000, was reduced to KSh 10,000. At the same time, the rent for a three-bedroom house would cost KSh 14,500, down from KSh 18,000.

Those residing in double rooms would pay KSh 4,000 from KSh 5,500.

Following the drop in power prices, Anyanga noted that the cost of electricity would be reduced to KSh 650 from 1,200, while Wi-Fi services would cost KSh 500 from KSh 1,000.
