A Nairobi single mother has shared her heartbreaking story of familial rejection and difficulties caused by intense downpours.

She recounts how her husband turned away from her upon the birth of their two daughters, harbouring disappointment for not having a male child as he anticipated.

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Ndanu said the discord over their children's gender eventually led to her husband taking a second wife after she walked out of the marriage.

"My husband rejected me because I had not born a male child. He then married another wife which escalated the situation after I went back to my parents' home. I have not spoken with my husband since then," she said.

Seeking solace in her parents in Machakos county, Ndanu found understanding and refuge as they welcomed her with open arms, providing her with a home and a small parcel of land.

However, her decision to leave her marital home was met with disapproval from her two brothers, who orchestrated malicious acts such as placing beehives near her residence.

She later experienced a harrowing assault in front of her children, resulting in another pregnancy.

Irene Ndanu leaves Machakos for Githurai 45

Amidst escalating trauma and familial strife, the mother of two was compelled to flee to Githurai 45, Nairobi, where she endured nights exposed to the elements.

With the kindness of a good Samaritan, she secured temporary shelter in an informal settlement in Kareb Centre, Kahawa Wendani, where her landlady offered compassion by waiving rent for a month.

Tragically, just as her situation seemed to stabilize, heavy rains inundated her neighbourhood, sweeping away her humble abode.

Now, she and her two children find themselves among the displaced, seeking refuge in a deliverance church in Kahawa Wendani. However, their respite is short-lived as they face eviction from the worship centre by Saturday, May 11.

"I was fortunate to get help from a compassionate landlady. However, the houses were swept away by floods. She also travelled home and I am very sorry for what she went through. We then went to Kahawa Primary School but were evicted and brought here. Unfortunately, we have been given notice to vacate by Saturday," the devastated mother explained.

What help does Irene Ndanu want?

Struggling with no source of income to facilitate relocation or provide for her children's education, Ndanu appeals to the goodwill of others for assistance.

Despite lacking familial support, she expresses a desire to be self-sufficient through entrepreneurial endeavours if allowed to do so, thereby ensuring the well-being of her children and the unborn baby she carries.

"Right now, I do not know how my children will go back to school. They have no uniforms, fees or food. I am pleading with well-wishers to support me take them to school. I am homeless, no job, and schools are reopening. I am about to give birth but I have nothing to support the situation. I will appreciate it if I get a shop to operate," she pleaded.
