Odisha, India - At least five people have been killed and several others injured after an oil tanker crashed into a roadside tea stall on National Highway 59 in Gunjam.

What caused Odisha accident leading to 5 fatalities

The accident, which occurred early on Thursday morning, August 22, happened after the tanker collided with a passenger bus.

According to The Statesman, the collision occurred when the bus driver, travelling from Bhawanipatna to Berhampur, attempted to overtake the tanker coming from the opposite direction.

”Reckless over-speeding and attempts to overtake resulted in the road accident fatalities. We have registered a case in this connection,” the police said.

Odisha TV added that the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle and that one of the fatalities was a passenger on the bus.

Four of the deceased including three who were taking tea, died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the injured are currently receiving treatment at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where their condition is reported to be critical.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed sorrow over the tragedy and announced compensation of KSh 307,330.12 for the families of the deceased and KSh 153,665.06 for those critically injured.

He also assured that the injured would receive free medical treatment.

In other news, 17 people were confirmed dead and 41 were seriously injured after a gas explosion at a pharmaceutical industry in India.

The authorities disclosed that preliminary investigations showed the blast was caused by a gas leak which eventually hit an electrical panel.

According to the local police, workers caught in the blast suffered horrific chemical burns, given the magnitude of the fire.
