Uganda Red Cross Society indicated that around 37 people were seriously injured in the accident.

"Our response team this morning responded to the road traffic accident that occurred in Kyazanga, where a Fuso truck collided head-on with Gateway bus.
It is unfortunate that some people lost lives immediately. The injured survivors have been taken to the nearby health facilities and those in critical condition to be referred to Kampala for further management," Red Cross said.

Eyewitnesses say the speeding Gateway bus was attempting to overtake another bus before colliding with the truck that was ferrying several bags of maize.

"The bus driver was overtaking a Jaquar bus when he failed, he ended up having a head-on collision with the incoming truck," Richard Ssekitoreko, an eyewitness said as reported by The Monitor.

What caused the Salgaa accident

In other sad news, a tragic crash in the Migaa area of Salgaa early Tuesday morning, August 20, resulted in the deaths of 13 passengers.

There are concerns that the death toll may rise, as rescuers suspect that additional bodies may still be trapped in the wreckage.

Survivor Rhoda Atieno, who was travelling from Kisumu, revealed that the bus had 71 passengers en route to Mombasa and that the crew had faced mechanical issues throughout the journey.

She also mentioned that the bus had not been serviced when it left Mombasa for Kakamega.
