Kenya's Fiath Cherotich has beaten Winfred Yavi to win the 3000m steeplechase Diamond League title in Brussels.

The Olympic bronze medal edged the Olympic champion in the last lap to secure a massive win.

Cherotich clocked 9:02.36 to win, while Yavi, the world champion, finished in 9:02.87, while former Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai was third.

The trio took the lead from the start and it was only a matter of who will finish in what position.

Yavi was in front early on before Chemutai took control of the race. In the final lap, the two veterans faded as Cherotich, the Olympic bronze medallist, took the lead.

The young Kenyan did not look back as she outsprinted Yavi, who was trying to catch up. Cherotich clocked 9:02.36 to secure a huge win in her young career, per Diamond League.

"I was saying today, let me run my own race, because the team was strong but I said it might be my day and fortunately I thank God I was the winner. I'm very happy [to beat Yavi]. The season has been good to me, I have joined the seniors and I have run well," she told CNN journalist Larry Madowo.

At only 20 years old, Cherotich has achieved a lot in her career. She will be looking to take down Yavi in next year's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Faith Cherotich takes bronze

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Winfred Yavi won Bahrain's first gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Yavi crossed the line first in the women's 3000m steeplechase, beating defending champion Peruth Chemutai and Kenyan star Faith Cherotich, who took bronze.

Yavi nearly breaks world record

TUKO.co.ke also reported that Winfred Yavi nearly smashed the 3000m steeplechase world record at the Rome Diamond League.

The Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete missed the world record by six-thousandths of a second. She beat Peruth Chemutai once again on the homestretch with an amazing kick.
