Nairobi - Businesswoman Agnes Kagure has condemned the recent spate of school fires around the country.

Coming after 21 pupils died in an inferno at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, Kagure said the fire incidents are too sad to comprehend.

"The unfortunate spate of school fires around the country is one we cannot sit back and watch unfold. The loss of lives, life-long injuries and trauma on survivors is too sad to comprehend," Kagure said on Monday, September 9.

The businesswoman urged the government to involve all stakeholders in the immediate review of boarding school policies.

Kagure argued that policies should ensure a student-friendly environment and put more emphasis on revamping the safety guidelines.

"The government should involve stakeholders and move with speed to review the boarding school policies to ensure they are student-friendly, revamp the safety guidelines and emergency education in our schools and have in place, robust counselling services that are a go-to for students and not seen as a punishment. Let's do all we can to ensure our schools are our children's second homes where they discover their greatness, and not danger zones," she added.

What Ruto said about the Endarasha fire incident

Meanwhile, President William Ruto sanctioned the Ministry of Interior to expeditiously probe the fire tragedy that befell Hillside Endarasha Academy, which killed at least 21 learners.

While commiserating with the school and the affected families, the president suggested that the fire broke out due to a supposed laxity on the school's part.

While pledging government support to the affected families, the head of state ordered that whoever is found to have slept on their job be held to account.
