Kiambu - Juja is engulfed in grief and outrage following a heart-wrenching incident where a five-year-old boy was mauled to death by a cackle of hyenas.

The tragic event has sent fear through the community as it marks the third fatal hyena attack in the area within the past month.

How was Juja boy attacked?

The young boy, described as an only child, was sent by his family to the shop at Witeithie-Nyacaba around 7pm.

A report by Citizen Digital revealed that as he made his way back home, the pack of hyenas struck, leaving the family devastated.

Local residents have long complained about the looming threat of hyena attacks and have called for urgent government action.

In a dramatic display of their sorrow and desperation, the outraged residents took to the streets on Thursday, September 5 morning.

They barricaded both sides of Thika Road at Ndarugo Junction, expressing their anger at the government and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for what they perceived as a lack of effective response to the crisis.

KWS moves to tame hyenas in Juja

Juja South Estate residents were also thrown into mourning after a 52-year-old food vendor was mauled to death by hyenas.

Nancy Njoki was returning to her small kiosk from the market where she had gone to buy kale, cabbages, and other supplies for her daily operations when the wild animals fatally attacked her.

Her belongings were discovered a few meters from the attack site, where hyenas allegedly devoured her head, stomach, and waist. Her family has committed to seeking legal justice.

In response, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and other stakeholders launched the second phase of 'Operation Ondoa Fisi Juja' in the sub-county on the night of Wednesday, August 7.

How to avoid a hyena attack

Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) issued a raft of safety tips for Kenyans to follow when attacked by hyenas.

KWS explained that hyenas regularly stare into the sky to identify circling vultures to help locate their next meal.

The service issued tips, including not running when encountering a hyena, making noise, or pretending to be dead.
