Nairobi: Suspected Thugs Who've Been Terrorising Matatu Users Along Waiyaki Way Arrested

• The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives have announced the arrest of six suspects who pretended to be matatu operators
• After posing as matatu operators, they would kidnap and steal from unsuspecting passengers who boarded their vehicle
• The DCI explained that an eyewitness tipped them off about the crimes committed by the alleged gang in Parklands

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested six men accused of posing as matatu operators in Parklands to kidnap and rob passengers of their valuables.

How did DCI arrest the suspects?

In a statement obtained by TUKO.co.ke, the DCI reported that the six individuals operating aboard a matatu with registration number KAQ 654A were arrested after a tip-off from a member of the public.

The investigation unit said the individual who provided the tip had witnessed the matatu used by the suspects being involved in an accident after picking up a female passenger.

"On the fateful day, the thugs who were posing as matatu operators heading to town are reported to have picked a passenger at Kempinski only for part of gang members to disembark from the matatu leaving the lady at the mercy of their fellow robbers," read the statement by DCI.

The eyewitness reported that after the accident, he realized a passenger had been kidnapped. However, the suspects then fled the scene.

How did suspects get into accident after kidnapping?

The DCI reported that as the suspects began their robbery, the female victim called for help, causing them to panic.

This caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in an accident.

"The accident gave them up to a hawk-eyed member of the public who later confided in the DCI what she had discovered on the fateful day," the DCI further stated.

After receiving the tip-off, the DCI assembled a team of detectives who launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the six suspects.

" A quick-witted team of OSU detectives was assembled and sent on a mission that has led to the arrest of Boniface Wachira Mwangi, Jackson Kimani Thuo, Titus Mburu Njonjo, Dennis Omondi Otieno, George Vincent Otieno, and John Waweru Njenga," the DCI said.

One of the suspects reportedly had five mobile phones and a tablet. A female suspect remains at large.

The DCI is now urging anyone who may have been a victim of the alleged gang to report the incident to them.

In a separate incident, DCI arrested two notorious robbery suspects terrorizing residents in a dramatic swoop on Monday, September 16.

The suspects were smoked out of their hideout in Utange village, where the sleuths believe they were planning another attack.

According to DCI, the young men became notorious in the region, often striking fear in their victims while riding motorcycles during their assaults.
