Citizen Digital reported that the other women managed to escape with minor injuries, but Anyango was trapped in the deepest part of the shaft, leading to her demise.
Otieno urged artisanal miners to avoid working during the rainy season, as the mining shafts become unstable and more prone to collapse.
Additionally, 20-year-old Brandon Omondi was injured while attempting to rescue Anyango. He sustained injuries to his lower limbs and was taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
Anyango's body has been recovered and taken to the mortuary at Siaya County Referral Hospital, where it will be preserved pending a postmortem examination.
In other news, five family members were tragically killed in an accident along Eldoret-Malaba Road. The family was travelling from Turbo, where they had attended a wedding.
According to the police, the collision happened after a speeding oil tanker collided with a tractor, lost control and rammed into their Probox car.
Among the deceased was a bride whose wedding the mother described as beautiful. The grieving mother painfully narrated how the event was, stating that she did not expect her daughter to die on the road.
