Her husband passed away following an illness, leaving her and their young children behind and without sufficient support.
"The children are suffering since the death of their father. Their mother has a mental illness to the extent that she can go missing for about two weeks, leaving the young children unattended to," Irine Maiyo told TUKO.co.ke.
Caroline and her six children, aged six to 17, live in a small, poor-condition mud house.
It has old, rusty iron sheets with holes, making the shelter unfit for rainy weather.
"There's no one in the family who's able to help. They only depend on neighbours, and sometimes they stay without food for days," she said.
Maiyo said that the residents of Usalama village, Ainabkoi-Olare ward, and Uasin Gishu county have been helping the family but still need further assistance.
Some children need to be in school, but since their mum has no income, it has become impossible for them to get an education.
