Kirinyaga - Residents of Mwangathia village in Ndia Constituency were left in shock after a family rushed to bury their kin.

Most African traditions hold the dead in high regard and, in most cases, always keep a vigil or have a prayer service before burial.

However, as shocked villagers watched, 60-year-old Stanley Mugo's burial happened in less than 10 minutes.

James Ngaire, a relative of Mugo, disclosed that he was against any ceremony being conducted during his burial.

Ngaire said he wished to have his body taken directly from the mortuary and into his last resting ground.

"We took the body from the mortuary and took it directly to the grave as he wished," Ngaire said, as reported by Citizen Digital.

Why Mugo wanted to be buried this way

The chairman of Mugo's burial committee, John Mugo Nyamu, explained the last respects to the deceased could be expressed in various ways among Africans.

Nyamu said they also had many unanswered questions on why Mugo opted to be buried in an unconventional manner.

"Last respect for the departed is expressed in so many ways, mostly the religion or traditional practices, but we wonder why Mugo decided to be buried this way," Mugo opined.

During the burial, a moment of confusion occurred when a group of local clergymen tried to conduct prayers.

Mugo's relatives quickly stopped their attempt as the coffin was lowered into the grave without prayers.

Widow attacks priest during burial

In a separate incident, mourners in Western Uganda were treated to free drama in May 2022 when a woman attacked a preacher during her husband's funeral.

Dinavance Twinobusingye attempted to hit reverend Nathan Nkuranga after implying she was responsible for her hubby's death.

According to Monitor, she was arrested, and the funeral was called off, with the priest asking for a post-mortem to be conducted.
